Step 24. Bathroom Lighting Guide

It is often overlooked how important lighting is to a well designed bathroom scheme. This does not necessarily mean banks of lights in regimented patterns, but it does mean choosing lights that provide good direct and indirect lighting. It is also important to consider low energy options actively in your bathroom scheme, especially if your room is dark during daylight hours. You can make excellent savings for not a lot of compromise on looks. I have provided links to good lighting products below, and will be adding ranges and advise as I find anything of interest.

Bathroom zone lighting safety requirements

Lighting safety requirements are essential and often badly executed in old bathrooms so require updating to the new regulations,There are 4 zones covered by the guide on the link below depending on water proximity and danger levels.

Lighting options

Ceiling lighting

This type fits flat against the ceiling and has various dome style sealed lights . There are single 2D and Double 2D low energy options which are best for maintenance and light coverage. The choice of colours and styles has been limited until recently, but is worth considering now.

Recessed spotlights

Still the favourite choice for lighting in all zones if the right fitting is selected. it can also be fitted with long life LED bulbs for low maintenance

Exposed spotlights

Single spots are allowed in zone 3 if made for this purpose and are useful in open roof situations where ceiling beams are available to use.

Track type spotlights

Short track light options in decorative styles are acceptable if made for bathroom use. These are available from 2 spotlights upto 4 normally. I still think that the choices are limited in bathroom lighting ranges and needs sorting out.

Ceiling rose type spotlights

Decorative circular type ceiling roses with 2 - 4 spotlights are popular for cheapness and ease of installation. The options are limited again in bathroom ranges and prices are much more than normal ceiling lights.

Wall lights and spotlights

This section is for mirror lights and wall mounted lights that are made for bathroom use only. There is a good variety and I have provided links to lots.

Led uplighting spotlights

A new and exciting addition to the bathroom for mainly floor based uplighting. The wattage is minimal and the energy savings are immense.

Extractor options

Ceiling/ extractor lighting combination

Spotlights and extractor combinations have been around for many years and do solve a design problem by putting light into the middle of a shower rather than needing to be off-set to avoid the extractor or visa-versa. The exractor vent is around the edge of the spotlight so is quite neat and compact.

Wall mounted

Not my favourite option because it can be noisy and too visible. I have not fitted many of these for aesthetic reasons. If there is no access to the loft or soffit then it can be necessary to fit this option. It will mostly be the same as ceiling mounted types, with or without time delay options.

Ceiling mounted

A good all round solution if not bought cheaply. Electricians continually buy cheap versions of this extractor which wear and reduce in efficiency so that they are near to useless. This option also can be bought with a timer delay which is essential for windowless bathrooms (and compulsory for building regulations).

In-line type

This is my favourite basic choice for low noise and options for power out- put. The extractor is in the loft so can be bigger for larger bathrooms. Because it is sited in the loft, the noise problem is reduced.

Humidistat type extractor

This is an option I use quite often if there is a desire to keep the bathroom dry in every situation from low to high bathroom usage. There is a sensor to detect when the humidity is too high which switches the extractor on. These extractors do have an over-ride so that you can switch the extractor on for smells etc. There are also options with sensors to switch on as you enter, aswell as time delay.
